Rules and Regulations
Date and times:
The contest begins at noon June 26 and runs through noon July 3.

Artwork may be created:
Within our circulation area (from East Platte Avenue south to Milton E. Proby Parkway, and from Union Avenue east to Powers Boulevard)
On your personal private property, on city sidewalks or at one of our officially designated Art Areas, listed below:

Mission Trace Shopping Center - 3031 S. Academy Blvd.
- Solid Rock Christian Life Center, 2520 Arlington Drive
- Southeast & Armed Services YMCA, 2190 Jet Wing Drive
- Sand Creek Library, 1821 S. Academy Blvd.
- Ruth Holley Library, 685 N. Murray Blvd.
- Lexington Village Apartments, Chelton Road and Astrozon Boulevard.
- Sunshine Studios Live, 3970 Clear View Frontage Road.
- Centennial Elementary School, 1860 S. Chelton Road.
- Sierra High School, 2250 Jet Wing Drive.
Entries MAY NOT be created in city streets or on stretches of sidewalk where the artistic process impedes either ADA accessibility or heavy-use foot and pedal traffic.
How to participate:
Artists are invited to work alone or in teams.
Team members should please be sure to adhere to Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment best practices regarding maximum group size, social distancing guidelines and wearing PPE such as masks. For more details visit covid19.colorado.gov.
Original works may be of any size, and may be created in color or black-and-white non-oil based washable chalk. No permanent or semi-permanent medium such as pastels, paint or marker will be accepted.
Artwork may be signed, in chalk, by the artist
Artwork must be appropriate for viewers of all ages and could illustrate and/or incorporate one or more of the Southeast Express’ branded taglines: Southeast strong, Southeast proud, we love Southeast, we are Southeast and many voices, one community.
No words or images designed to advertise, market or promote a business, service or good will be accepted.
Derogatory, violent or hateful messaging and language will not be tolerated and will be grounds for immediate disqualification.
Artist categories:
Entries will be divided into emerging artist and professional categories for older age divisions, with the following age divisions in place:
SOLO age divisions
- 10 and under
- 11 to 15
- 16 to 20 (professional and emerging)
- 21 and over (professional and emerging)
TEAM categories
- Professional
- Emerging
Age divisions do not apply to team categories, so families and mixed-age groups may all participate.
How to enter:
To submit your work of art for judging, email at least one image of your piece and provide the following information to newsroom@southeastexpress.org:
Note: Personal contact information, including your email, telephone number and address will be kept confidential and will only be used for verification purposes or to contact you in the case you are a winner.
In addition, please post at least one (1) photo of the piece on social media, being sure to tag us and use the hashtag #Southeastsidewalks. You may find us on Facebook and Instagram at @SoutheastExpressNews, or on Twitter at @SEExpressNews.
Judging:
Our judges are professional artists who will score the works on a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being the greatest. They will be asked to rate each image based on:
First impression
Creativity
Originality
Artistic skill and use of the medium
Interpretation of the theme(s)
The images that generate the highest cumulative scores in each division and category will be declared the winner. The top-scoring entries will be eligible for inclusion in a mural at Mission Trace Shopping Center.
In addition, we will award a people’s choice award based on social media feedback. The image with the most likes wins!
Judges’ decisions are final.
The fine print:
The Southeast Express and our judges reserve the right to determine the suitability of artwork for consideration. Any decision related to the appropriateness of an image is final.
Digital images will be taken during the submission and judging of entries. Southeast Express reserves the right to use photos for editorial, marketing, promotion and/or publicity purposes. The Express will make ever effort to credit images of artwork to the submitting photographer and creator.
The Express is not responsible for damage or defacing of artwork.
